Basic Income Illusions: Lucas Stanczyk and Debra Satz

Should basic-income strategies be prioritized over labor organization? Are unconditional cash payments to individuals the proper response to collective problems at the societal level? Join us as our panelists discuss universal basic income as a response to poverty, unemployment and inequality.

Lucas Stanczyk is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Harvard and works on topics at the intersection of political philosophy and political economy. Prior to Harvard, he was an assistant professor of political science and affiliated faculty member of MIT’s philosophy department.

Debra Satz is the Vernon R. and Lysbeth Warren Anderson Dean of the School of H&S, the Marta Sutton Weeks Professor of Ethics in Society, and a Professor of Philosophy. Satz is known for her work in political philosophy, where her research has spanned topics on the moral limits of markets, the interpretation of equality of opportunity and the nature of rational choice. She is the author of several books, including Why Some Things Should Not Be For Sale: The Moral Limits of Markets (2010) and Economic Analysis, Moral Philosophy and Public Policy (with Dan Hausman and Michael McPherson) (2017), as well as numerous articles. She is the current editor of the journal “Philosophy and Public Affairs.”

Margaret Levi (moderator) is the Sara Miller McCune Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University, professor of political science at Stanford, and Jere L. Bacharach Professor Emerita of International Studies in the department of political science at the University of Washington. Most recently she has been elected to the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences (2016) and the American Philosophical Society (2018). In 2014 she received the William H. Riker Prize in Political Science. Levi is also a member of the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society Advisory Board.
